The Xbox 360™ Wireless Controller lets you experience the ultimate in wireless freedom with precision, speed, and accuracy. The Xbox 360 Wireless Controller features:
The Xbox 360 Wireless Controller is for use exclusively with the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system.
For information about using the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with a particular game, see your game manual.
Before you can use the Xbox 360™ Wireless Controller with your Xbox 360 console, you need to insert batteries into the controller and introduce the controller to the console by wirelessly connecting the two.
The wireless controller uses only the AA battery pack (provided) with either disposable AA batteries (not included) or the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack
To insert batteries into the wireless controller:
- Press the tab on the top of the AA battery pack and pull down to detach it from the controller.
- Insert two new AA (LR6) batteries with their positive (+) and negative (–) ends positioned as shown on the underside of the battery pack. For best performance, AA rechargeable batteries are not recommended.

- Slide the AA battery pack back into place on the controller and push in to lock.
Important
Before boarding any aircraft or packing the wireless controller in luggage that will be checked, remove any batteries from the wireless controller. The wireless controller can transmit radio frequency (RF) energy, much like a cellular telephone, whenever batteries are installed.
Up to four controllers, wired and wireless, can be actively connected to an Xbox 360 console at one time. Each connected controller is assigned a quadrant on the Ring of Light. Before you can connect a wireless controller, at least one quadrant must be free (unlit).
To disconnect a wireless controller, press and hold the Xbox Guide button for three seconds, and then turn the controller off.
To connect your wireless controller to your console:
- Press and hold down the Xbox Guide button or the Start button until the controller turns on.

- If your console is not on, press the power button to turn on the console.

- Press and release the connect button on the console.

- Press and release the connect button on the controller.

- After the Ring of Light on the controller and console spin and flash once, the controller is connected. The quadrant that remains lit indicates the controller's position.

- Your controller is connected to only one console at a time. You can connect to a new console at any time, but your connection to the previously connected console will be lost.

Composed of four numbered quadrants, the Ring of Light surrounds the Xbox Guide button on the controller (as shown) and the power button on the console.

When you connect a controller to your console, it is assigned a specific quadrant, which glows green to indicate the controller's number and position. Each subsequent controller connected to the console (up to four) is assigned an additional quadrant.
If system problems should arise, the Ring of Light on the console will flash combinations of red.
For more information, see Troubleshoot Your Wired Controller.
The expansion port (with 2.5-mm audio connector) on your controller lets you connect expansion devices like the Xbox 360 Headset to your controller.

The inline release on your controller cord is a safety feature designed to reduce the chance of the Xbox 360 console or a computer falling when the cord is pulled. If the console or a computer falls and hits someone, especially a small child, it could cause serious injury. To reduce the risk of injuries or damage to the console or a computer, it is important to use the controller and the inline release properly.

Use the controller connector, not the inline release, to routinely connect and disconnect the controller. If an inline release disconnects, simply reconnect it by aligning the grooved indentations and pressing the two parts completely together. The controller will not work unless the inline release is connected properly.
Never tape, glue, or otherwise prevent an inline release from pulling apart.
The inline release reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of the console or a computer being pulled off its surface. To further reduce the risk:
- Do not allow anyone to pull on the controller or controller cord in a way that causes the console or a computer to move.
- Do not allow controller cords to become crossed or tangled with one another.
The controller is equipped with a charge port on the front of the controller. The charge port works exclusively with the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit (sold separately).
Vibration Feedback
The controller works with compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to enhance your experience with physical vibrations that correspond to specific in-game events. Enable Vibration is the controller's default, but you can disable this feature if you wish (doing so will conserve battery power).
To manage the controller's vibration feedback:
- With your controller connected to your console, press the Xbox Guide button and select Personal Settings.
- Select Vibration, and then choose to enable or disable, depending on your preference.
When using the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit to charge the controller's rechargeable battery while you play, the controller will still draw battery power (rather than AC power) to deliver vibration feedback. The status light may alternate between red and green as it uses battery power and then recharges itself.
