How to manage memory

You can store a large amount of saved games and music to your Xbox hard disk. If you want to move saved games between Xbox consoles, you must have a memory unit. With the memory unit, you can also store saved games (but not music). The memory unit plugs into the top of the controller. Many games support direct saving to the memory unit, but some do not. This does not mean that these saved games cannot be moved. To manage Xbox memory:

  1. Start your Xbox console with no disk in the disk tray. You are taken to the Xbox dashboard.

  2. Use the Directional pad (D-pad) to select Memory, and then press the A button to continue.

  3. You are prompted to choose between the Xbox hard disk and any plugged-in memory units (sorted by controller).
For example, if a memory unit is plugged into controller 1, use the D-pad to select the circle labeled Controller 1. If more than one memory unit is plugged in, it may be difficult to see, but there are two memory unit icons inside the Controller 1circle.

  4. Use the D-pad to select either the hard disk or the memory unit that you want to use (check the memory unit information at the lower center of the screen to make sure you selected the correct memory unit), and then press the A button.

  5. You are taken to a screen that lists all the saved games on the hard disk or memory unit (sorted by game).
    • The memory unit list includes an option to erase the memory unit or personalize it (by creating your own title for it).
    • You cannot personalize your Xbox hard disk in the same manner as you can a memory unit. For more information about this topic, see "How to change the Xbox Console Name."

  6. Saved games are sorted by the game title.
For example, in a row for the game Halo, the Halo emblem located on the left represents all Halo games; the circles to the right of the Halo emblem represent specific saved Halo games. If you choose to erase the Halo emblem, you erase all Halo saved games. If you scroll to the right and erase a circle on the Halo row, you erase the particular saved Halo game represented by that circle.

  7. Scroll right, and then select the game that you want to copy or erase.
Note: If you only see the option to erase, this means you have selected the game emblem and not a particular saved game (when you select a particular saved game, in addition to the option to erase, you also have the option to copy). If this occurs accidentally, just back out. To do this: When you are prompted to confirm that you want to erase the game emblem, press the B button. You are returned to the screen that lists saved games.

  8. Select Copy, and then select the location you want to save the game to.
