Console stops responding and there is no error message

When you play an Xbox game, use the Xbox Dashboard, or wait for the Xbox console to start a game, you may experience both of the following symptoms:

  • The console may stop responding.
  • You do not receive any error messages.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Determine whether the problem has occurred more than once. If it has not, it was probably a one-time event, and it is unlikely that it will reoccur.

  2. Determine whether the disc in use is the source of the problem. To do this, test several similar Xbox-compatible discs in the system (use games to test game freezes, DVDs to test DVD freezes).

  3. If the problem occurs with only one disc, the disc may be defective. Therefore, follow these steps:

    1. Try the steps outlined in the webpage: "Game consistently stops responding at the same point"

    2. If the issue continues to occur, return the disc to the store where you purchased it.

  4. If the problem occurs with more than two discs, follow these steps:

    1. Are you using any unlicensed or incompatible peripherals? If so, the peripheral may be causing the problem. Xbox Support recommends that you use licensed or compatible peripherals with your Xbox video game system.

    2. Determine whether the console is located in an unsuitable environment (for example, an entertainment system with other heat producing equipment; in an unventilated cabinet, enclosed on all sides). If the console is in a poor location, move it to a well ventilated location, such as a table top or the floor. Try to reproduce the problem. Review the Xbox Instruction Manual for information about correct placement of the console.

    3. If the issue continues to occur, your Xbox may require service by Microsoft. For information about how to obtain this service, contact Xbox support .
