Xbox controller is not functioning correctly

To resolve this issue:

  1. If you are using the DVD Movie Playback Kit, remove the DVD receiver.

  2. Make sure that the controller is plugged in correctly.

  3. Make sure that the inline disconnect plug is connected.

    • If it is not connected, the plug is cylindrical and the thumb indentation is not facing up. Reconnect the short cable piece on the Xbox Controller connector to the inline disconnect plug.

    • If it is connected, make sure the thumb indentation is facing up. Make sure that no foreign substance or damage might be causing a problem in the controller plug or the controller port.

  4. Disconnect and then reconnect the Inline Safety on the controller.

  5. Plug the controller that is not functioning into a different controller port, and then test the controller to determine if the controller or the port is the problem.

  6. Repeat step 5 for all four ports.

    • If the controller works in some ports and not others, retest the ports that failed the first time. If you confirm that a certain controller port is not functioning correctly, your Xbox console may have to be repaired. If this is the case, contact Xbox support to find out how to resolve this issue.

    • If the controller does not function in any of the ports, remove the disc from the disc tray, and then restart the Xbox console (to take you to the Xbox dashboard).

  7. If you are not taken to the Xbox dashboard, make sure that you are using the original controller that came with your Xbox video game system. If you are not using the original controller, switch to the original controller.

    • If the original controller functions correctly, the other controller is malfunctioning. If this is the case, contact Xbox support to find out how to resolve this issue.

    • If the original controller does not function correctly, contact Xbox support to find out how to resolve this issue.

    • If no controllers work with the Xbox console, your Xbox console may have to be repaired. If this is the case, contact Xbox support to find out how to resolve this issue.
