Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

By Shadow x 88

Has everyone forgot our friend Tony Hawk? Together with Neversoft he has been churning out a new instalment every year but since the release of Skate, everyone has begun to look down on this old friend. Has the Hawk man cashed in his last chips or is this the best Tony Hawk Game yet?

In the new Tony Hawk instalment they bring in some new features some of which are very cool. First of all I am going to talk about character development and the ability to choose your own path wether it be the Rigger path which gives you the ability to modify the environment to how you like to skate whether you like big air or sick grinds you can mod the environment to your liking and if you can't mod the environment in a way that suits you, you can always just create a whole new environment. Unlike old hawk instalment's you can build anywhere not just in a separate game type with an empty box, so if you'd like to spine transfer over a fountain you can build a ramp on either side or if a pro/sick challenge has got you pulling your hair out then just build a bigger ramp to get that last trick in for Pro/sick.

Now we move on to Hardcore, if you like going faster then a speeding bullet and doing death defying jumps this is the choice for you. If you choose to go along the hardcore path you will gradually unlock ability's such as aggro kick which lets you go superfast and the ability to carve up bowls like never before. Most challenges in hardcore will involve you beating up people or doing huge jumps that you would never be able to make normally but that's what the aggro kick is for. None of the Hardcore challenges are that difficult due to your new found abilities but if you just want to have some fun and do big jumps and beat people up then choose this path.

Now we move on to the Career skater if you like to be the centre of attention and do pin point tricks that the average skater couldn't pull of then this is for you. If you choose to go along the Career path the you will gradually unlock ability's such as NTG (Nail the Grab) and NTM (Nail the Manual) which are taking the NTT (Nail the Trick) ability from Tony Hawk's Project 8 and taking it to the next level. Some of the challenge's you will face in Career are nailing grabs, manuals and tricks. It all seems pretty straight forward but some of these challenges even on the Am difficulty can be difficult. As you play through this path you will gain add ons to your NTT abilities such as being able to perform tricks with your board upside down or "Trucks Up" for extra points.

Now last of all we move on to The Street challenges these may not have an in depth story behind them and no new abilities but they are still a good fun challenge. The Street path brings back classic game type's from old Tony Hawk game's such as the chalk challenges from Project 8 and the Classic challenge's from all the game's. The classic challenge's are the one's where you would have to collect S-K-A-T-E, beat the high combo's, etc. which everybody loved and is what made the Tony Hawk games so enjoyable. It will also include new challenges such as film an photo challenge's which put a bit of a spin on old Tony Hawk Film/Photo challenges.

Well thats all the different paths you can choose from and don't think you have to stick to one you can do all of them with the same character and don't go thinking the Rigger, Hardcore and Career paths are just challenge after challenge they have in depth story's that can get interesting at times.

Overall the new Tony Hawk instalment is in my opinion the best one yet it it puts together all the best parts of all the old game's into one great game. But don't think it's without it's flaws it's graphics aren't that spectacular, it does have it fair share of glitch's and there aren't that many good skating spots but you can always build your own place's to skate, but over all it's a great game I give it:

Graphics: 7/10
Gameplay: 8.5/10
Sound: 8.5/10
Longevity: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

8/10
