Xbox Member ReviewScene It? Lights Camera ActionBy Cutter Edgewise When this game was announced at the 2007 E3 Expo as one of Microsoft’s premiere exclusives, the reaction could be somewhat condensed into one, hyphenated word: “Wha-huh?” To hardcore gamers like myself, this is a sensible reaction, but, if you’re a fan of movies, TV quiz shows, board games like Trivial Pursuit and general four player fun, you should pick up Scene it: LCA, because you’re in for a surprise. The Package The game is packaged as an essential box set – four wireless “Big Button” controllers, a wireless receiver and the disc – containing 1800 questions about movies. The Gameplay The game modes are set up into three distinct categories, Short Play (for around 20 minutes of questions), Long Play (up to an hour) and Party Mode (where the action never stops!). The typical play pattern of the game involves various puzzle beds, where 5 questions revolve around specific movie-related ideas. One of the first ones you’ll encounter is the Screening Room where you’ll watch a short clip from a movie, and then answer questions related to what you’ve seen. Other puzzle beds include a pictionary-style drawing round, finishing the last words in famous quotes, listening to audio-only clips, anagrams, identifying movie stars from photos of when they were young, identifying props and a lot of other varied ideas. Depending on the puzzle, all four players will have to be quickest on the buzzer to guess correctly, or all four players will select from the multiple choice answers available. The scoring is done very well, as it starts at 2000 points for a correct answer, and decreases with the time you take to answer – so, fastest on the buzzer can be a big advantage! It really is a lot of fun, and can test the most hardened of movie-buffs. Another bonus is the number of questions – 1800 in all, and the game has been designed so that (at least initially), you don’t see any questions repeated, and it definitely keeps you waiting for the Office Space questions, or (in the case of my wife), Grease questions. 8/10 Graphics and Presentation Overall the game is presented very blandly, the graphics are extremely simple, and once you’ve seen most of the puzzle beds, the format is extremely repetitive. With 1800 questions available, you’ll be visiting the same puzzle beds often, but to its credit, the competitive nature of the game and the amount of fun you have with your mates is enough for this not to be a major gripe. Also between puzzle beds, an announcer will make comments - you’ll often be desperate for him to be quiet so you can get on with the questions. Some definite improvement is required if we ever see a Scene It 2, but at least you can press A to skip most of the dialogue. 6/10 Achievements One of the great features of the game is achievements, which come thick and fast early in the game while playing with your friends – there are achievements for answering all questions in a puzzle bed correctly, answering 25 questions relating to movie era’s (80’s, 70’s etc), and questions relating to genres of movies (comedy / horror), so you really do get rewarded for being a good movie buff. There are also rewards for answering 10 or 15 questions in a row, and answering 30 or 60 questions during a game without giving a wrong answer – good luck with that one!! 8/10 The Final Cut Despite its obvious presentation issues, Scene it is still a total blast to play, and if you are a fan of movies, TV quiz shows, or generally beating your friends at anything, you’ll want to give Scene it a crack. “Do or do not, there is no try” – Yoda
