Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

By Sargath

Prey, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, sure they all bring something very new to the first-person genre but scratch all that and what are they … a generic FPS. Dead Rising, Saint’s Row, scratch all their nifty features and you sir have a generic sandbox game. Guitar Hero 3 scratch all its features and you sir have.. um.. a music simulator game?

This year has seen the years biggest AAA titles be released unleashed onto the 360, Mass Effect, Halo 3, CoD4, Assassin’s Creed, and a little game called Guitar Hero 3 , which has risen in the ranks to superstardom.

Guitar Hero 3 is the first attempt made by Neversoft, and although this is a safe entry into the franchise it is by all means a very fun one.

Graphics wise it isn’t anything in the likes of Call of Duty 4 or Mass Effect, though it does stand out from the crowd with its unique style. Character models are surprisingly interesting to look at, although the character models look a bit cartoony they still give off that aura that makes them look very menacing and aggressive which is good as this game is about metal. Venues are unique and have been given a lot of attention to as the detail they have to look very metally is excellent. If your not playing and just watching a friend play it is really fun to watch the guitarists movements as your friend is shredding on a solo, as the animations in this game in terms of signing and also signature rock and roll moves is just spot on.

The gameplay of GH3 is extremely fun as we have a few features from GH2 coming back in all their glory, hammer-ons and also pull offs, but that’s not to say we can’t have anything else. Neversoft have added a new feature called Boss Battles. Now with Boss Battles you need to have worthy enough bosses and Neversoft have delivered with Slash and also Tom Morello, oh yeh and Lou the Devil. This new feature is awesome as yo may think you have mastered every song but oh no.. Slash and also Tom Morello have recorded their own unique song for their certain boss battle. Good luck beating Slash on Expert.

With over 70 songs and also DLC songs this game will see you playing for a long time, mastering Easy, Medium, Hard, and also the Insane difficulty. Playing through single player by yourself, or why not bring a mate along and rock out in co-op mode, which has its own storyline compared to single career. The four modes that are available both online and offline are Pro, Pro-Face Off, Battle, and also co-op. now with DLC already available and more coming on the way, you will be spending a lot more endless nights jumping off the couch screaming and kicking your foot in the air, only to land and realize that the song is over, but alas you then remember you just downloaded the Foo Fighters pack, and again you begin to rock out to some great classic Foo Fighters.

Putting aside DLC song packs that are available for GH3, we have something that was not seen in the previous GH game, online play. This addition to the game was ideally the best thing that happened to GH3. Don’t have a mate available to do co-op with you … no worries just jump online, bored of single player and want to vs someone from other side of Australia … no problems just jump online and choose any of the 3 from 4 available options and bang your in. Yes GH3 on Live can be annoying as most of the time you will have to host your own match as all the games I have found seem to be either Americans, or with Aussies, yet with very crappy internet as the connection meter is on low. The key success to online play is either having a very fast internet connection or joining a match with the host having a good internet connection.

Overall Neversoft’s first take in the series with GH3 is a safe one, but none the less a very fun and enjoyable experience. As they say why fix something that isn’t broken?

Not the best graphically looking game, not the most hyped up game, not the best online play, but very unique, fun and enjoyable game that will see you bringing out the inner rock god inside you.
