Versus Mode Tips and Tactics

At A Glance
  • Tips and tricks for Gears of War's online Versus modes.

The team-based multiplayer mode in Gears of War requires the same basic skills as the single-player campaign: Tactical use of cover, environmental awareness, and a unified attack. There are, however, strategies unique to the multiplayer experience, and the following tips should help you on your way to victory.

One hit will bring that chainsaw back down.

Active Reload Burst
When two players take aim at each other, step from cover, and let each other have it, the victor is determined by two factors: Accuracy and power. I can't make you more accurate, but if you master Active Reloading, you will come out on top, even if you waste a few rounds just to get another reloading opportunity. The extra punch you get from a perfect Active Reload will make all the difference in a head-to-head shoot out.

Taken
Throughout the course of play online, you'll notice a gun icon pop up in the lower left corner of the screen with the notation, "taken." When you see this, check with your teammates to see if they picked it up. If not, you should be familiar enough with weapon locations in the level to determine exactly where one of your opponents is at that moment.

Chainsaw in Wait
Gears of War has given birth to one of the most gory and glorious death sequences in gaming history. The visceral thrill of the chainsaw kill is addictive, but it should still be used only sparingly. Instead of charging your enemies with your saw at the ready, which is a sure-fire way to get killed, wait for approaching enemies to come around a corner. With your chainsaw revved and ready to go, it will only take a flick of the stick to slaughter your opponent in the worst way possible.

Stop the Saw
If you see an enemy approaching with the chainsaw at the ready, don't panic. A single shot from any weapon will force the enemy to drop the chainsaw, and that will place you at an immediate advantage.

Camper's Lament
Taking advantage of cover is crucial in both the single-player campaign and when playing online, however the danger of being flanked is very real. Don't stay too long in the same spot, or the odds are a shotgun blast or a chainsaw blade will remind you why it's a bad idea to camp out. Cover up, evaluate the situation, and keep moving.

When the Hammer beeps, it's time to split.

Grenade Stick
Unlike the chainsaw, which can be nullified with a single shot, the grenade stick is a guaranteed kill if you can get close enough. Simply equip a grenade and tap B when next to an opponent. This has the advantage of being silent, whereas you can hear the saw revving from a distance.

From Their Spawn
A typical online match begins with both teams rushing towards the special weapons. Resist this temptation from time to time, and take the long route to your enemy's spawn location instead. Then, work your way slowly forward and catch them from behind.

Group Effort
Gears of War online is team-based, although you'd hardly know it from playing Ranked matches with players who refuse to pick up their mic and communicate. Take a leadership role when the match begins and stress a cooperative effort. Move together with your teammates, covering each other, and double team isolated opponents. Call out enemy locations as you spot them, as another teammate may be able to get the drop on them. If you play together, you will win together.
