Tools of the Trade

Shooters come, and shooters go. Unless a game has depth, it will fade into obscurity, never to be seen again (until it appears as filler copy on “Games of the Past” lists). Counter-Strike™ for Xbox, on the other hand, is of legendary staying power. This title’s combination of online play and diverse weaponry makes for a combat experience like no other. To avoid some potentially frustrating (not to mention embarrassing) online experiences, here are some pointers you should follow when selecting weapons for each round.

Like a Kid in a Candy Store
At the start of the round, regardless of which side you choose (counter-terrorist or terrorist), you’ll spawn in a safe zone, completely unarmed, but with some cash to spend. Spend those first few dollars carefully, as it will directly affect your game. Generally, it’s a good idea to buy a semi-automatic pistol, some ammo, and a flak jacket for added protection. Remember: Everyone else in the first round will have the same amount of cash to play with, so you can expect a lot of small arms fire. Combat will likely be of the “close quarters” variety, so prepare accordingly.

If your team wins the first round, you’ll have more money to arm your player with better gear. Members of the losing side that were killed in action must repurchase any gear they bought during the previous round. Weapons, ammo, and special devices will show up in the user interface under the appropriate heading. I have included your available choices in this article, along with notes that may help you in selecting the right tool for the job. But, keep in mind: Depending on your cash situation, it might be best to go with a similarly equipped, but slightly less expensive, variation on the same design. For example, if submachine guns are your thing, the Schmidt MP has the same features as the Mac 10, but it costs $150 less. That extra savings could be applied to grenades or extra ammo. On the other hand, cheaper weapons can be less accurate, so if you’re playing with the cheaper ones, you’ll need to adjust your combat strategy. For instance, it’s best to fire automatic weapons in bursts, since this will minimize the recoil that might decrease your accuracy.

Finders Keepers
When a soldier takes the big dirt nap, he can’t take his toys with him. You’ll find spare arms littering the playing field towards the end of each match. If you see something better lying around, pry it from the soldier’s cold dead fingers, and try it on for size. But, don’t bother rummaging for spare change—payday isn’t until next week.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to hold your own on the field of battle. Select your weapons wisely, and use them properly. See you at the spawn point!
