Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare

By Solid Snake AU

Call of Duty 4 takes a daring step away from World War II to bring us Modern Warfare, was it a wise move or should they stick to retelling historical events, short answer: COD4 rules.

Like previous Call of Duty games, this one let’s you control different characters to show different sides to the story. This time around there are two characters, the US marine’s levels contain very over the top battle missions, and the SAS soldier’s missions are stealthier. The balance between the two are just perfect, when you have had enough battles, it will throw in a stealth mission, when you are bored, it throws in a battle mission or two. It sometimes seems as though the game reads your mind to bring you heaps of fun. The campaign is short unless you are playing on Hardened or Veteran, and I should also point out that the difference between the difficulties is overwhelming. Recruit and Regular are too easy but then there is a huge leap when you get to Hardened and Veteran.

The storyline is standard, yet detailed. It is the typical terrorist threatens to use nuke and blow up most of USA which will be an approximate 5,000,000 casualties (according to the games briefing videos which are places in-between missions as a loading screen, which set the scene perfectly for each level). The storyline is basic but realistic, making the storyline realistic and not over the top makes the war seem real and frightening, as in you feel as though it is actually happening as you are playing the game.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

The graphics are stunning, the best graphics in a first person shooter on the 360 to date. The character models look superb, the environments look real, and the explosions…oh my god, when that nuke hits just before the level, ‘Aftermath,’ you will be blown away, literally. In the game and in your head, you will be amazed. And in the mission, ‘All Ghillied up’ when you see the sniper in the grass camouflage move through the grass, you will be amazed at how realistic it looks.

The sounds in this game are so lifelike that it feels as though you are there. Explosions, team-mates on walkie talkies, gun shots, flash bang grenades, it all sounds unbelievably real. This combines with the incredible graphics to create a flawless environment. This may be the first Call of Duty game that isn’t based on a real war, but it feels more real than any of the others, I guarantee it.

I have one word that will keep you playing this game for a long time to come, online. This game is so good online that it is not funny. War is not meant to be this fun, but it is, when you get a kill it is the most satisfying kill ever, you hear the bullets pierce through your opponents flesh and see them fall with an unbelievably satisfying blood splatter poor out of their arteries, it flashes on the screen how many points you got awarded for that kill and it says in big, bold letters; ‘You Killed Putnum,’ or whoever it may be…just thought it would be a good example of you can kill.Stick out tongue [:P]

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Everything you do online earns you points, which goes towards levelling up, as your ranks get higher, you unlock better guns, better perks, better this better that a better experience that will make you more into the game than ever because you slowly become…unstoppable.

An interesting feature is that they haven’t put in achievements for the online side of the game, they have been brave about this but it has worked out. They have added challenges. They don’t go on your gamer card, they don’t unlock achievements, and they don’t give you gamer score. What they do is they give you plenty of experience points, which slowly but surely levels you up which ranks you up, when you unlock better guns, perks…just see the above paragraph…

This is the most immersive online experience I have ever played and I know that people will be playing this for years to come, and I will be on that bandwagon.
