Road Rage? Take Revenge!

At A Glance
  • Burnout Revenge is the perfect party game.
  • Look for shortcuts and keep the gas pedal floored.
  • Blast your nitro boost whenever possible.
  • Use Aftertouch crashes for lots of extra cash.

What might have been the best Xbox® game of 2005 might also be the best Xbox game you haven't played yet. While the Burnout series of games has an ardent following—due to the most addictive and entertaining game play available anywhere —the game still somehow slips under many gamers' radar. Don't let it slip by you.

If you're an adrenaline junkie, this is your game. The sense of speed in Burnout Revenge™ is inimitable, providing a white-knuckle ride every time you get behind the wheel, er ... controller.

The game is easy enough for the novice gamer to play, but challenging enough for anyone to enjoy. The World Tour single player mode provides you with plenty to do—and you have the opportunity to try every mode the game has to offer at some point during the Tour. Try to meet all the goals and increase your driver rating while unlocking faster and better cars on some of the most devilishly designed tracks imaginable.

With a little practice, Aftertouch crashes can rack up
more dollars of damage than your original collision.

Burnout Revenge's Crash Mode might be the greatest Xbox party game ever devised. It's visceral, exciting fun for everyone to enjoy, and it's as much fun to watch as it is to play. The goal is simple: Cause as much highway destruction as possible, as dramatically as possible.

Here are a few quick pointers to help you rise through the ranks and wreak the most havoc.

Watch for Shortcuts
Blue lights will flash on poles placed on either side of shortcuts placed along the track. Sounds easy, right? Well, when you're going 170 miles per hour, just because you can see them doesn't necessarily mean that you can get over to them in time ...

Ramps also present opportunities to take a lead or to wreck an opponent, so catch air when you can—more boost will be your reward.

Ramps: The advantages of a shortcut, none of the traffic.

Pedal to the Metal
This is Burnout—don't worry about driving conservatively. Get used to the speed of the game and keep the gas floored. Unless you're going through an extremely sharp turn, there's rarely any need to use the brakes. Just lay off the gas a smidge, and put the hammer down as you reach the apex of the turn, causing a drift that can earn you more boost. You've got to be fast to win, so push it as far as you can go.

Don't Be Stingy With the Boost
You can always make more—driving like a maniac (smashing opponents, drifting through turns, narrowly missing traffic, catching air, or driving on the wrong side of the road) earns more boost for you, so when you get it, use it. Granted, this makes the game almost supernaturally fast, but that's the point—and you need that speed to win.

Don't save your boost, there's no point. Keep driving like your hair's on fire, and it's even possible to make it through a race without ever taking your finger off the boost button. If you can pull that off, I'll personally guarantee you a win—but I sure won't want to face you on Xbox Live®!

Full speed ahead!

Plot Your Course, Plan Your Shot
Crash Mode is a combination of high-speed golf and billiards, with scrap metal and explosions thrown in. Make sure you use the Crash Cam before your run, and gauge the traffic patterns, the route and anything explosive along the way before you begin. A little planning goes a long way, as you can often "check" traffic into other lines, or even off of overpasses entirely, opening up an entirely new avenue of destruction.

Choose Your Weapon
Depending on the situation, sometimes light sports cars are ideal, but occasionally heavy trucks provide the best option. If you need to fling traffic around, look for heavier vehicles with a high Crashbreaker rating. If speed (or a distance that needs to be jumped) is your need, then a coupe or roadster may be your best bet. If you're planning on catching some air, though, be sure to mind the wind!

See? Destruction can be beautiful.

Aftertouch is Your New Best Friend
Even after you've collided with another vehicle or object, holding down the "Aftertouch" button allows you to steer your burning heap into even more targets. You go into slow-motion and, with a little practice, your Aftertouch crashes can rack up more dollars of damage than your original collision. Basically, there's never any need to let go of it until the clock runs out.

There you have it—now get out there and fight your way to the top! Happy hunting!
