Connect Status Error Message: Check Cables

Details: No connection

A connection to a network device (DSL or cable modem, router, or PC) was not found. Check these possible causes:

  • A cable is not connected. Check that all cables are connected correctly.
  • Network device is off. Turn on all network devices.
  • Your network device may require either a straight-through or cross-over Ethernet cable. Make sure to use the correct cable.

This error can occur if your computer is not turned on, or if you are using the wrong type of cable to connect your Xbox console to your computer.Verify that you are using a crossover and not a straight-through Ethernet cable to connect the Xbox console to the computer. Also, verify that you are using an Ethernet cable and not another type of cable (such as an RJ-11 phone cord).

Note: To distinguish between a crossover cable and a straight-through cable, hold both ends of the cable with the bottoms facing up (copper connectors showing), and look at the order (left to right) of the colored wires in the clear plastic connectors. A standard straight-through Ethernet cable has the wires in the exact same order at both ends. In a crossover cable, the order of the colored wires is different on each end.

Connect Status Error Message: IP Not Confirmed/IP Settings Incorrect

Details: Gateway

The network gateway could not be reached. Verify the IP Addresses match the settings provided by your ISP.

The IP addresses you entered into the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard may be incorrect. Because you are using Internet Connection Sharing(ICS), an IP address should automaticallybe assigned to the Xbox console.Change the IP settings in the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard to Automatic.

If your IP settings are already set to Automatic, or you continue to receive this error message, ICS may not be configured correctly in Microsoft Windows. For information about how to configure ICS,view the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Details: IP conflict

The IP address is already in use on your network. In Network Settings, use automatic configuration for your IP Addresses or check the IP Address you manually specified is correct.

The IP address that you configured in the Xbox Dashboard is currently in use by another device on the network. When the Xbox console is connected using Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), the IP Settings in the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard should be set to Automatic. If the IP settingsare already set to Automatic and you are still receiving the this error message, ICS may not be configured correctly in Microsoft Windows. Network services (DHCP or PPPoE) were not found. Check these possible options:

  • Check that all cables are plugged in correctly.
  • Reset your modem by turning it off, waiting one minute, then turning it on. Then reset other networking equipment the same way.
  • In Network Settings, enter a static IP Address, specific Host Name, or MAC Address as provided by your ISP.
  • Your Internet service is not working. Try again later.

Note that your ISP may not allow connection sharing through your computer. Contact your ISP to ask if this is the case, and whether you have other options for sharing your connection between multiple Ethernet-based devices. (For example, if your ISP can swap your USB-only modem for an Ethernet modem, this would enable you to use a broadband router to share your connection.)

You may also receive this error message if you have PPPoE Settings turned ON in the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard.Because you are using ICS in (and PPPoE is configured in Windows, not at the Xbox console), turn PPPoE Settings OFF in the Xbox Dashboard.

Incoming traffic from the network is corrupted. If your computer can connect and browse the Internet but Xbox displays this error message, either Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is not configured correctly on your computer, orthe crossover cable used to connect the Xbox console to the computer is defective.

After you confirm that the crossover cable you are using is not defective, you may need to re-configure ICS in Windows. For information about how to configure ICS,view the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Connect Status Error Message: DNS Not Resolved

Details: Communication error

The Xbox Live service cannot be contacted or is not responding. Please try again later or visit www.xbox.com/en-gb/live for more information.

You may receive this error message for any of the following reasons:

  • Something along the Internet path to the Xbox Liveservers is down.
  • The Xbox Live servers are down.
  • Your ISP is experiencing a network outage.

Contact your ISP to determine whether they are experiencing network problems.
  • You are running firewall software in Windows thatis blocking the ports required for Xbox Live.

A firewall is a security system that acts as a protective boundary between a network and the outside world by blocking network traffic on certain ports. If your modem supports Ethernet connections, connect your Xbox console directly to your modem (bypassing the router) and see if the problem is resolved.

If you are able to connect to the network when you bypass your computer, you may need to configure your firewall software to allow network communication on the specific ports required for XboxLive. For Xbox Live to work correctly, the following ports need to be open:

  • UDP 88
  • UDP 3074
  • TCP 3074

For information about how to open the ports needed by Xbox Live, consult your firewall software documentation or computer manufacturer (if your software was pre-installed).
